Natural indigo dyeing is a fascinating process in which your fabric or yarn emerges from a green dye bath and, upon contact with the air, tranforms into beautiful shades of blue ranging from sky to midnight. Magical! Put on your scientist cap and begin by following the instructions to make your quart of dye extract stock. From this you'll take a small amount to combine with the other ingredients to make the dye bath. When it is the proper pH immerse your goods for short periods of time or dips until what comes out is two or three shades darker than the color desired. While not an exact science it is certainly exciting. Your extract stock should be enough for at least two dye sessions and will last indefinitely if sealed securely and tucked away in a dark, cool cupboard.
